This backyard retreat in Noe Valley lies between the main house and a small guest cottage in the rear of the lot. The space was conceived of as three separate but related spatial rooms: a raised deck seating area adjacent to the guest cottage; a main dining/lounging area; and a small lawn and children’s play area. The terrace is divided along a central axis by a 4’ wide flush pipe boardwalk which connects the back door of the main house with the front door of the guest cottage. On the East side of the lot, a 6 foot concrete wall, divided into six 6’ horizontal sections provides an elegant and minimal privacy screen. A linear planting of the succulent Echeveria ‘Doris Taylor’ borders the wall, their grey green foliage mirrored in the soft grey of the concrete. In one 6’ section of the wall, a custom Cor-ten steel barbeque with a concrete countertop is cantilevered above the patio. Opposite the main dining area, a lawn panel is bordered by a narrow 6’ fern wall which offers a verdant counterpoint to the cool elegance of the concrete wall.
